A common framework for nonlinear diffusion, adaptive smoothing, bilateral filtering and mean shift

چکیده
In this paper, a common framework is outlined for nonlinear diffusion, adaptive smoothing, bilateral filtering and mean shift procedure. Previously, the relationship between bilateral filtering and the nonlinear diffusion equation was explored by using a consistent adaptive smoothing formulation. However, both nonlinear diffusion and adaptive smoothing were treated as local processes applying a 3 £ 3 window at each iteration. Here, these two approaches are extended to an arbitrary window, showing their equivalence and stressing the importance of using large windows for edge-preserving smoothing. Subsequently, it follows that bilateral filtering is a particular choice of weights in the extended diffusion process that is obtained from geometrical considerations. We then show that kernel density estimation applied in the joint spatial–range domain yields a powerful processing paradigm—the mean shift procedure, related to bilateral filtering but having additional flexibility. This establishes an attractive relationship between the theory of statistics and that of diffusion and energy minimization. We experimentally compare the discussed methods and give insights on their performance. q 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

متن کاملImproved Edge Awareness in Discontinuity Preserving Smoothing
Discontinuity preserving smoothing is a fundamentally important procedure that is useful in a wide variety of image processing contexts. It is directly useful for noise reduction, and frequently used as an intermediate step in higher level algorithms. For example, it can be particularly useful in edge detection and segmentation. Three well known algorithms for discontinuity preserving smoothing...

متن کاملEdge-Preserving Smoothing and Mean-Shift Segmentation of Video Streams
Video streams are ubiquitous in applications such as surveillance, games, and live broadcast. Processing and analyzing these data is challenging because algorithms have to be efficient in order to process the data on the fly. From a theoretical standpoint, video streams have their own specificities – they mix spatial and temporal dimensions, and compared to standard video sequences, half of the...
متن کاملOn Robust Estimation and Smoothing with Spatial and Tonal Kernels∗
This paper deals with establishing relations between a number of widely-used nonlinear filters for digital image processing. We cover robust statistical estimation with (local) M-estimators, local mode filtering in image or histogram space, bilateral filtering, nonlinear diffusion, and regularisation approaches. Although these methods originate in different mathematical theories, we show that t...
